The Role

Based in Canberra, this role sits at the heart of Australia’s legal and political landscape. The High Court Reporter plays a critical role in delivering authoritative and engaging coverage of the High Court and ACT courts.

The ABC is looking for a High Court Reporter to join its News team, producing accurate, timely and compelling content across multiple platforms. This is a fast-paced role focused on breaking court stories, interpreting complex legal decisions, and ensuring audiences across Australia understand the issues shaping the justice system.

The Job

  • Report on High Court and ACT court proceedings, delivering timely and accurate content.
  • Break original, agenda-setting legal stories for local and national audiences.
  • Interpret complex legal judgments and translate them into clear, engaging stories.
  • File breaking news coverage for broadcast and digital platforms, amid a fast-moving news environment.
  • Collaborate with other interstate and national ABC teams to produce multi-platform content.
  • Build and maintain strong contacts across the legal community.
  • Maintain a comprehensive court diary to ensure ongoing case coverage.

About You

You’re an experienced journalist with exceptional editorial judgement and a passion for covering legal affairs.

You'll have:

  • Highly advanced reporting and content creation skills in a fast-paced, multi-platform environment.
  • The ability to interpret complex legal material and communicate it clearly to a broad audience.
  • Strong contacts (or the ability to build them) within the legal or judicial sector.
