James Cook University (JCU) is seeking an accomplished and strategic leader as Manager, Internal Audit to shape and lead a contemporary, high-performing internal audit function. ABOUT THE ROLE

The Manager, Internal Audit plays a critical leadership role in strengthening governance, risk management and internal controls across the University. Leading a contemporary, independent and objective internal audit function, the role provides assurance, insight, foresight and trusted advice to support effective decision-making at the highest levels of the organisation.

Operating with a high degree of professional independence, the position works closely with senior leadership, the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee, and external co-sourcing partners to deliver a forward-looking, risk-based internal audit strategy aligned with JCU’s strategic priorities and enterprise risk profile. The role is responsible for overseeing complex assurance and advisory engagements across financial, operational, compliance, technology and strategic domains, while ensuring alignment with Global Internal Audit Standards and evolving governance expectations.

As a key partner to executive leadership, the Manager, Internal Audit builds strong, trusted relationships across the University, identifies systemic risks and control opportunities, and contributes to a culture of accountability, transparency and continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
You are a seasoned internal audit leader with deep expertise in delivering independent assurance within complex environments. With postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline and recognised professional certifications (such as CIA, CRMA, CISA, CA or CPA), you bring extensive senior-level experience leading risk-based internal audit functions and delivering complex assurance and advisory engagements across large, multifaceted organisations.

You are skilled in identifying systemic control weaknesses, interpreting emerging risks and translating complex issues into clear, pragmatic and value-adding insights for senior decision-makers. An exceptional communicator, you have a proven ability to engage and influence executive leadership and governance committees through high-quality reporting and presentations. You operate with the highest levels of integrity, independence and sound judgement, supported by a strong commitment to ethical practice and continuous improvement. You are also recognised for your ability to build trusted relationships and influence across diverse stakeholder groups.
