Position Description

James Cook University (JCU) is seeking a motivated and service‐focused Supervisor, Library Services to play a key role in delivering high‐quality, inclusive library services that support student success and enhance the overall campus experience.

  • Full time – 36.25 hours per week
  • Located at the Cairns campus

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to Manager, Library Experience, this role is central to coordinating day‐to‐day library operations, maintaining welcoming library environments, and providing responsive, user‐focused services aligned with JCU’s tiered service delivery model. Using insight and observation, contributes ideas and initiatives to continuously improve the student experience.

As Supervisor, Library Services, you will:

  • Coordinate daily library operations, including staff rosters, building oversight, and liaison with relevant JCU work units regarding facilities and maintenance needs.
  • Deliver consistent, professional enquiry services across multiple channels, ensuring client interactions are responsive and aligned with service standards.
  • Maintain welcoming, inclusive, and safe library spaces that support study, collaboration, and wellbeing.
  • Assist clients with access to library collections, including borrowing, returns, and basic troubleshooting of digital platforms.
  • Provide front‐line support for library services, including assisting with technology use and guiding users to appropriate resources and services.
  • Apply University policies and procedures in day‐to‐day service delivery, including financial transactions, appropriate library use, and supporting student conduct and wellbeing.
  • Use data and observations to identify opportunities, propose improvements, and contribute to projects that enhance the student experience.

WHAT YOU CAN BRING TO THE ROLE

You are a proactive and people‐focused professional who enjoys supporting others and improving services. You bring:

  • Qualifications in Library and Information Science, or a related discipline, aligned with the relevant Higher Education Worker (HEW) level under the Enterprise Agreement.
  • Demonstrated experience using library technologies and digital tools, including library service platforms, digitisation equipment, online enquiry or chat systems, digital repositories, and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • A strong understanding of contemporary and emerging approaches to inclusive, client‐focused library services, with a genuine commitment to supporting diverse user needs.
  • Well‐developed communication and organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate staff, manage competing priorities, and contribute positively to a team environment.
