How Daily Rates Work in Australia
As a contractor, you are typically paid a daily rate instead of a fixed annual salary. Your annual income depends on how many weeks you work. Most contractors budget for 48 working weeks per year (240 days), allowing for 4 weeks of unpaid leave or gaps between contracts. This calculator uses 48 weeks as the default, but you can adjust this on the results page.
Superannuation for Contractors (12%)
From 1 July 2025, the superannuation guarantee rate is 12%. This is paid by the engaging entity (your client or agency) on top of your daily rate — it is not deducted from your pay. Super forms part of your total package and builds your retirement savings.
GST Obligations
If your annual turnover exceeds $75,000, you must register for GST with the ATO. You will add 10% GST to your invoiced daily rate. For example, a $800/day rate becomes $880 on your invoice. GST is a pass-through — you collect it from clients and remit it to the ATO via quarterly BAS lodgments. It does not affect your taxable income.
